THE LOGIC BEHIND IT

A sphere changes how distance works.

Each guess compares the geographic centre of your country with the target’s centre. The haversine formula measures the shortest route along Earth’s surface. The arrow gives the initial compass direction of that route. Distances are approximate: borders, capital cities and flight routes will give different answers.

In “Spot the country,” the orange shape is your clue. In “Follow the distance,” only countries you’ve guessed are coloured; warmer colours mean closer. Both modes give you six attempts. Repeated or unrecognised guesses don’t use an attempt.

Map: Natural Earth / World Atlas, simplified 1:110m boundaries. The quiz draws from larger countries large enough to recognise at this scale; small islands and some territories are omitted.

About Globe quiz

Made by Malav Joshi. A place to practise and understand the decisions behind the game.

How do the distance clues work?

Clues compare geographic centres using great-circle distance along Earth’s surface. The arrow points in the initial direction of the shortest route. A smaller distance means a closer guess; it does not mean two countries share a border.

Does the quiz include every country?

The map uses simplified Natural Earth geometry. Mystery countries are selected from those large enough to recognise at this scale. Small islands and some territories are omitted. You can replay with a different country after every round.
